About the Society
For centuries, the Marathwada region suffered injustice and neglect under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad. During this period, educational facilities were extremely limited. Students had to travel to district centers for matriculation and to far-off places like Aurangabad, Hyderabad, Pune, and Amravati for higher education. At the Tahsil level of Kandhar, only primary education was available, and that too in the Urdu medium, which further deepened cultural dependency.
In such a critical situation, Hon’ble Dr. Bhai Keshavrao Dhondge (Ex-MP, MLA, Freedom Fighter, “Vikas Ratna”) emerged as a torchbearer of change. Despite innumerable difficulties in his own educational journey, he rose to become a social worker, writer, thinker, politician, and Chief Editor of Jaykranti. His vision was nurtured by the encouragement of his mother, Matoshri Muktai Dhondge, who ensured he pursued higher studies at Nanded, Ambajogai, Amravati, Aurangabad, and Pune.
Having endured bitter experiences, Dr. Bhai Keshavrao resolved to dedicate his life to the social and educational upliftment of Marathwada. Guided by the principle “Vidhya Hech Jivan, Avidhya Hech Maran” (Education is life, ignorance is death), he laid the foundation of the Shri Shivaji Mofat Education Society at Kandhar on the auspicious occasion of Shiv Jayanti (Birth Anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) in 1948.
The Society, established at Gaul (a small village in Kandhar Tahsil), was named after the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Since then, it has been instrumental in providing quality education across Marathwada.
Today, the Society manages a wide network of schools and colleges, including Shri Sant Gadge Maharaj Mahavidyalaya, Loha (established in 1989), which stands as one of its senior institutions.
